About Programme
|
Located at the junction of Asia, Europe and Africa, the Middle East has witnessed the most critical stages of the human history. The most prominent developments in this vein are the invention of writing and money; human beings becoming productive as the result of agriculture, trade and craftsmanship and the emergence of large states. Undoubtedly, the most important region of the Middle East is Anatolia which has hosted many great civilizations since the beginning of human history. Being a preferred and continual settlement site since the early stages of the human history, hosting great civilizations and the emerging of the many developments in this region that mark the human history have brought about the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia.
Cultural heritage refers to the all of the properties on the ground, in the underground and underwater that is related to science, culture, religion and fine arts belonging to the historical and prehistorically eras. Those cultural properties may appear as concrete cultural remains such as archeological, urban and natural sites, memorials, historical sites, barrows, tumuli, churches and mosques and educational complex buildings near the mosques and may involve abstract cultural components such as language, stories, narratives and performing arts, common practices rituals and ceremonies, cuisine, traditional crafts and knowledge and customs regarding the nature and the universe as well.
It can recently be seen that the interest in the cultural heritage has been growing. This tendency also boosted the culture tourism. Today, most of the people who want to set out for touristic travel expect more than the arguments of sun, sand, snow and fun. The countries which have a rich cultural heritage like Turkey will become center of attraction in this regard. However, this brings with the obligation to employ quality tourism personnel. Consequently, we have to train highly cultured tourism personnel with interpersonal skills in order to preserve the cultural heritage that we have properly and promote tourism as well.
The goal of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Program is to train and educate the personnel who will contribute to the efforts directed to preserve the cultural heritage of Turkey whose territory mostly covers the peninsula of Anatolia with due care, promote and turn these assets into a touristic attraction, thereby enabling sustainable development.
The graduates of the program will be equipped with theoretical knowledge and managerial skills regarding abstract cultural heritage besides the tangible historical sites and properties and also have new perspectives regarding the appreciation of the cultural heritage in line with the growing awareness in the world.
The Cultural Heritage and Tourism Program which is established within the Department of Travel, Tourism and Recreation is a two- year formal associate degree program. Courses involve both theory and application in order to expand practical exposure. The students are obliged to do a 30 days long internship within the enterprises and entities of both the private and the public sector in order to recognize the tourism sector closely and build upon their theoretical knowledge.
The graduates have the chance of employment in both private and public sector. Upon entering KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Exam) the graduates can be appointed to the positions belonging to the archeological, ethnographical and historical museums affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Provincial Culture and Tourism Agencies, agencies of the Council for Conservation of the Cultural and Natural property, Control offices practicing conservations and pertaining units in municipalities. The graduates can also work for privately held museums, tourism agencies and hotels.
The students who graduate from the Cultural Heritage and Tourism program can transfer to the baccalaureate degree programs in Business Administration, Management Information Technology, Managerial Economics, Hospitality Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Logistics Management, Tourism Management, Tourism and Hotel Administration, Tourism and Hotel Business.

ECTS and Erasmus Coordinator of the Department
History
|
Cultural Heritage and Tourism Program was opened the Sinop University Vocational School in 2012. The program, which is under the Department of Travel, Tourism and Recreation was accepted students starting from the 2013-2014 academic year. The night teaching of the program was opened in 2015-2016 academic year. The department, which was closed for student intake in 2016, resumed receiving students at Gerze Vocational School in 2017-2018 academic year.

Qualification Awarded
|
Upon successful completion along with the program´s qualifications of the program, Associate degree is given in the field of cultural protection and tourism. Students graduating from the program receive the "Title of Profession."

Admission Requirements
|
Students who want to start the program have to take the TYT examination conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM). Students are placed by OSYM according to TYT score type results. Students who have started studies in other universities within or outside of the country may apply for their recognition (Mevlana, Farabi, Erasmus student exchange programs and horizontal transfer). The recognition record is unique for each student and therefore the procedure is carried out accordingly before the start of each academic year.

Higher Grade Transition
|
The students who graduate from the Cultural Heritage and Tourism program, may pass to bachelor's programmes in related fields of study provided that the student obtains sufficient score in the Vertical Transfer Examination administired by the Student Selection Centre (History of Art, Business Administration, Management Information Technology, Managerial Economics, Hospitality Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Logistics Management, Tourism Management, Tourism and Hotel Administration, Tourism and Hotel Business). The students who graduate from the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Program are eligible to enroll in Anadolu University Open Education Faculty Business Administration Department without taking any exams, thereupon begin baccalaureate education from third class.

Graduation Requirements
|
In order to complete the program and obtain the associate degree with success, a student has to succeed in all their compulsory and elective courses shown in the program to complete at least 120 ECTS credits, has to pass all of the courses, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 and complete the 30 work day internship at the end of the second year with success.

Assessment and Grading
|
Assesment and grading regulations are specified in detail by the instructor of each course. Please see the Course Structure for details. Every student must sign up for the subjects at the beginning of the semester, and attend at least 70 % of the classes and 80 % of the applications to be able to sit for the semester end examination. Students must sit for at least 1 mid-term exam and 1 semester end examination for each subject. The mid-term exam (grades that will be resulted from the following evaluation means of a homework assignment, application exam, laboratory exam, seminar presentation or quiz may well be added to the evaluation of the mid-term grades) contributes 40 % percent and the semester end examination contributes 60 % to the calculation of the success grade. Every examination is evaluated over 100 points. The pass grade of a subject is at least 50 points. The students who take the grades of AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, DC and DD from a subject become successful at the subject. However, for the graduation, the average GPA of the student should be CC (60). Students who do not meet this requirement are required to take the average upgrade exam for the courses that they have not passed and the courses that they passed with DD and DC grades throughout their education.
